Timed outline

How to structure a 15-minute presentation in 12 slides

A plan for 12 slides over 15 minutes, about 1:15 per slide on average.

  1. 0:00–1:00

    Title and hook slide 1

Your title and the one message to remember. Open with a question, a number or a short story.

  2. 1:00–1:30

    Roadmap slide 2

Name your three points in one line each. At this length the roadmap keeps people with you.

  3. 1:30–5:30

    First point slides 3–5

Make the claim, back it with one chart or example, then a slide that shows why it matters.

  4. 5:30–9:30

    Second point slides 6–8

Start it by about 5:30. Open with a one-line recap so anyone who drifted can rejoin.

  5. 9:30–13:00

    Third point slides 9–10

Start it by about 9:30. If rehearsal runs long, cut an example here first.

  6. 13:00–15:00

    Close and questions slides 11–12

A summary slide with the three points, then a closing slide with your ask or next step. Leave it up for questions.

FAQ

How many slides for a 15-minute presentation?

A 15-minute presentation needs about 8 to 15 slides, at one to two minutes per slide. A detailed deck with dense charts or code needs fewer, about 5–8, and a visual deck of mostly images can use 15–30.

How long should each slide be in a 15-minute presentation?

About one to two minutes on average. With 12 slides, each one gets about 1:15. Title and section slides take a few seconds, so the slides with content get a little longer.

Does the 10/20/30 rule apply to a 15-minute presentation?

Only for a pitch. Guy Kawasaki's 10/20/30 rule says a pitch should have 10 slides, last 20 minutes and use text of at least 30 points. Scaled to 15 minutes at two minutes a slide, that is about 8 slides.

How many words is a 15-minute presentation?

About 1,950 to 2,250 words at a normal speaking pace of 130–150 words per minute, which is roughly 130–281 words of speaking per slide.

Is 20 slides too many for a 15-minute presentation?

Not for a visual deck. Twenty slides gives each one 45 seconds, which works for photos, diagrams or one big number per slide. With bullet points or charts, keep to 8 to 15 slides so people have time to read them.

How many slides for a 15-minute conference talk?

Check whether questions are inside the slot. Many conferences give 12 minutes to speak and 3 for questions, and 12 minutes needs about 6 to 12 slides. If the full 15 minutes is yours, plan 8 to 15.

How many slides for a 15-minute job interview presentation?

About 10 to 12: a title slide, a one-line agenda, two or three slides for each of three points, and a closing slide on why you are the right fit. Panels often ask questions as you go, so rehearse to finish in 13 minutes.
