How to structure a 1-hour presentation in 34 slides

A plan for 34 slides over an hour, about 1:46 per slide on average.

  1. 0:00–2:00

    Title and hook slide 1

Your title and the one message to remember. Open with a question, a number or a short story.

  2. 2:00–3:00

    Agenda slide 2

Name your three points in one line each. In an hour-long talk, people use it to keep their place.

  3. 3:00–18:00

    First point slides 3–12

Make the claim, back it with charts or examples, and end on a slide that says why it matters.

  4. 18:00–33:00

    Second point slides 13–22

Start it by about 18:00. Attention dips around here, so open with a recap and ask the room a question.

  5. 33:00–47:00

    Third point slides 23–31

Start it by about 33:00. If rehearsal runs long, cut an example here first.

  6. 47:00–52:00

    Summary and close slides 32–33

Start it by about 47:00. A summary slide with the three points, then a closing slide with your ask or next step.

  7. 52:00–1:00:00

    Questions slide 34

Start it by about 52:00. Leave a contact or next-step slide up. If questions have their own slot, give these minutes to your points.

FAQ

How many slides for a 1-hour presentation?

A 1-hour presentation needs about 30 to 60 slides, at one to two minutes per slide. A detailed deck with dense charts or code needs fewer, about 20–30, and a visual deck of mostly images can use 60–120.

How long should each slide be in a 1-hour presentation?

About one to two minutes on average. With 45 slides, each one gets about 1:20. Title and section slides take a few seconds, so the slides with content get a little longer.

Does the 10/20/30 rule apply to a 1-hour presentation?

Only for a pitch. Guy Kawasaki's 10/20/30 rule says a pitch should have 10 slides, last 20 minutes and use text of at least 30 points. The rule caps a pitch at 10 slides however long the slot, so a longer pitch spends more time on each slide or leaves the rest for questions.

How many words is a 1-hour presentation?

About 7,800 to 9,000 words at a normal speaking pace of 130–150 words per minute, which is roughly 130–300 words of speaking per slide.

Is 60 slides too many for a 1-hour presentation?

No, it is the top of the standard range: one slide a minute. That works when each slide carries one idea and little text. With dense charts, tables or code, aim for 20 to 30 so people have time to read them.

Is 100 slides too many for a 1-hour presentation?

Only if they have much text on them. A hundred slides gives each one 36 seconds, which works for a visual deck of photos, diagrams or one big number per slide. With bullet points or charts, keep to 30 to 60 slides.

How many slides for a 1-hour presentation with questions?

Check whether questions are inside the slot. If 15 minutes go to questions, you speak for 45, and 45 minutes needs about 23 to 45 slides. If the full hour is yours, plan 30 to 60.

How many slides for a 1-hour lecture?

Count only the minutes you talk. If 20 minutes of the class go to an activity or discussion, you speak for 40, which needs about 20 to 40 slides. Give each activity its own slide so the class knows what to do.

How many slides for a 1-hour training session or workshop?

Fewer than for a talk. If half the hour goes to exercises, you present for 30 minutes, which needs about 15 to 30 slides, plus one slide per exercise with its instructions.

How many slides for a 1-hour group presentation?

Split the time by speaker first. With four speakers and 12 minutes left for questions, each gets 12 minutes and about 8 slides; add a shared title slide, an agenda and a closing slide for about 35 in total.
